The American – The shoeless killer

Been wanting to see this film for a while now, ever since I saw the trailer at the cinema. Alas, I’m too poor to visit the cinema as much as I’d like, but luckily there is the joy of Sky box office and PSN. So we downloaded and watched it.

I wasn’t disappointed. George Clooney plays an American hitman in Europe. Within the first 5 minutes of the film, three people are dead, including his girlfriend. It was at this point I knew it was going to be a cracking film. Yet, the course of the rest of the film isn’t quite as violent. Clooney spends most of the film building an assassination weapon to specific criteria for a client. But the whole time he is plagued with paranoia and distrust – constantly worried someone is trying to kill him. A reasonable assumption since that’s exactly what they tried to do at the start of the film.

I have to say I think this is Mr Clooney’s best performance. He pulls off the paranoia and distrust very well. The tension is almost palpable and the performance is excellent.

The story itself is also fantastic. My wife said she thought the film went on too long and I can see how you might think that, but the tension was there the whole time.

My favourite part was probably the simplest. Being chased by another assassin, Clooney’s character slips off his shoes to make a silent escape. The number of times I thought a character should do this in a film rather than running around in noisy shoes, I can’t count. Brilliant film. Loved it.
