“If you don’t ask, you don’t get”

Was the wise words of a friend yesterday. So true. But sometimes you’ll ask a question and be sure you won’t get a positive answer.

‘Can I have a payrise?’

‘Will you wear this sexy French maid outfit for me?’

‘Can I borrow 3 grand to invest in jelly beans?’

So yesterday, when it dawned on me that @djformat4 was following me on Twitter and I could send him a private message, a brainwave hit me.

I wonder if he’d be willing to do an interview?

So I wrote and, not expecting a reply, went on with my working day. Then around 10 am got a tweet back:

DJFormat2

Deep breaths. Remain calm…

So we e-mailed each other a bit and now I’ve organised to go and see him in Brighton in a few weeks time. Totally unexpected.

I’ve been a fan of DJ Format since 2003 and the release of his first album ‘Music for the Mature B-Boy’. Which oddly, I bought from Virgin Megastores in a America and spent most of my Trek America tour listening to. In 2005 I went to a gig in Norwich at a tiny little venue (The Waterfront) which was quite probably the most memorable gig I’ve been to (considering I’ve seen Ice-T in the same place and Nas at the House of Blues in America – that was quite a feat). Since then I’ve bought the other albums and totally worn the CD’s out. So finding DJ Format on Twitter was cool, having him reply to me, then follow me was even cooler. Having him actually agree to interview with me – just some bloke off the internet – well, that’s pretty bloody awesome.

Trying to e-mail him (or indeed write this article) without sounding like a gushing fan is surprisingly difficult. Trying to keep a cool head. At the same time, I’m trying to research the arse off the internet so I’m well-prepared for the interview. Don’t want to look like an arse. I’m clearly not big enough of a fan – I didn’t know he drove the tour bus for Jurrasic 5? Shame on me. I just appreciate the beats, the fun and relaxed feeling I get listening to his music.

So, I’m putting together a list of questions to ask. I’ve already written to DJ Format to check what I should avoid asking. But I plan to avoid the cliché questions and one’s that have already been covered. So if you’ve got any questions you’d like to ask DJ Format drop a message in the comments or message me on Twitter.
