Checked my Playstore updates this morning and noticed a new app updating. Strange. So I clicked on this app called Google Play Newsstand and discovered that it was the old magazines app that’s now apparently merging with Google Currents.
OK, this could be good or not. I’m a big fan of Currents and have been for a long time. It’s a great tool for following and reading my favourite blogs/news sites with ease. It had an easy to use interface and made reading and sharing simple. I’d have to rate it one of my top 10 Android apps. So if they break it I’ll be upset.
On first look it certainly doesn’t appear that they’ve broken it. The interface is still simple and easy to navigate.
If you are a current Currents user then your subscriptions will be moved across and they’re accessed in much the same way. But in the menu there are also options for magazines and a new section called ‘read now’ which apparently puts all the hot topics in one place for you to instantly access. Hmm, well see.
Search for new things to subscribe to or browse via your interests to find new things to read. More of the old stuff but in a new interface.
There doesn’t seem to be massive amounts of differences to be honest. My only gripe is you can no longer swipe left and right to easily switch between editions/subscriptions.
